Flexible trees bend and grow

“A tree bends toward the light  … ” Rod Stryker, The Four Desires

I thought to end the tree week yesterday but today as my husband Ed and I took a walk in the woods he said,”Look at all the shapes of trees.  I always think of them as growing straight but they grow in every direction .”

Sometimes Tree trunks bend and twist to the ground trees while their branches grow in a radial spiral pattern.  So when we ‘do’ tree pose, why is it that we feel we must be symmetrical?  Or do we feel that way ?  Trees are tenacious and they will grow in many directions, bending and twisting to find the light.  The branches arrange themselves to balance the tree while the part which truly supports the tree, it’s roots grow in darkness, for the most part unseen.

Vrksasana, Tree Pose is asymmetrical. Look at your own structure, it is balanced but it curves and bends in various ways, some more desirable than others but all together it’s what you’ve grown and are growing into.  Nothing in nature that I know of except a snowflake is symmetrical but everything has balance, harmony and grace. What do we need to in order to grow towards the light. Will and willingness to celebrate the divine gift of live, to be present for the gift.

Prana upward life growing energy.  Apana downward reaching rooting and grounding. Udana circulating and also upward moving vibration.  Samana, balancing and digesting or assimilating and Vyana the outward expanding movement.  As you create tree pose feel these five aspects of Prana Vayu, the life force sometimes called the breath of Divine Purusha flow in every part of you and open your heart to receive the blessing that you are.  Once again, I repeat.
OM Namaste…. OM TREE
